| Question My eight year old grandson has cerebral palsy I want to get him a toy for Christmas that he can use with his Big Red switch but the switch toys all look so boring. Do you know where I can get a really fun toy that is switch operated? |
| Answer My eight year old grandson, Cole likes remote controlled toys,
I bet yours might too. Here is a "recipe" for adapting the Mighty Dump Truck from
Hasbro-
Materials needed: Battery Device Adapter - AA size
Rat Tail File (or alternative) Nylon Tie wrap (or alternative such as velcro strip, strong rubber band, etc...) The Radio Controlled Mighty Dump Truck remote control uses a 9V battery. However, the battery compartment is designed in a way that allows the AA battery device adapter to work in it. By installing a battery device adapter into the remote control and locking the "forward" button down, it allows a single switch user to active the drive forward control using an appropriate switch plugged into the battery device adapter. Adaptation: Install the Battery Device Adapter (1-BDA) from Ablenet, Inc., as indicated with instructions that come with the BDA. Fix the "forward" drive button on the remote in an 'always active' position using a tie wrap, velcro wrap, tape, or some other method. Process: 1)
Open the remote control battery door and using the file, remove part of the cover
or case to allow a wire to exit the battery door without being pinched.
